About HSG and Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) Scan

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) Scan

Hysterosalpingography, also commonly known as HSG is a type of x-ray exam prescribed mainly for women to examine the uterus and fallopian tubes. If you are trying to get pregnant but have been unsuccessful or have had multiple miscarriages, then an HSG test is done to check the shape and health of the uterus and to evaluate if the fallopian tubes are blocked or malformed in any way.

Generally, an HSG is taken in the following conditions –

  • Tumors
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometrial (uterine) polyps
  • Adhesions
  • Blockage of the fallopian tubes due to infection or scarring
  • Tubal ligation
  • Congenital problems (uterine anomalies)

An HSG exam usually takes about 30 minutes.

Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) Scan

An intravenous pyelogram is an advanced x-ray scan that helps in determining the abnormalities in the urinary system, as well as how quickly and efficiently you are able to handle fluid waste.

An iodine-based contrast material is used in an IVP to help assess the passing of any blood in the urine.

This scan is accurate enough to provide information that your doctor can conclude to treat you with medication and avoid surgery.

An IVP is performed if you have the following medical condition:

  • To know the reason for any blood in the passing of urine
  • Check for kidney stones or cancer
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Unexplained lower back pain
  • Determine any tumors in the kidney, ureters, or urinary bladder
  • To examine any scarring/damage due to urinary tract infection (UTI)

An IVP study takes around 60 mins. Sometimes if your kidneys function at a slower rate, the exam may last up to four hours.

Are there any preparations required before the test?

For HSG Test

  • If you have any prior medical reports or scans, it is advised to take them along with you.
  • The doctors will recommend a good time – seven to 10 days after the first day of your menstrual period, but before ovulation. This is the best time for the exam.
  • You will be given medications to take before the X-ray in case you feel any discomfort in the test.
  • Inform beforehand if you have an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted to avoid pregnancy.

For IVP Test

  • You may be asked not to eat or drink anything beginning at midnight, the night before your scan, however, you can drink only clear liquids a day before your scan and avoid milk products.
  • If you are taking medicines, take them only with sips of water and limit your clear water intake a day before your scan.
  • If you have any prior medical reports like creatinine reports or scans, it is advised to take them along with you.
  • You will be required to take laxatives or enemas the night before the X-ray to clear your bowels.
  • It is recommended to empty your bladder before the scan.
  • Inform beforehand if you have an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted to avoid pregnancy.

Other than this there are no special requirements for HSG or IVP scan. Make sure to wear comfortable clothing and avoid wearing any metallic items like jewels, mobiles, chains, pocket knives, etc. If you are expected to get pregnant, or currently pregnant, inform your doctor or lab technician before the scan.
