What Is An MRI Scan?
What is MRI? Magnetic Resonance Imaging is abbreviated as MRI. It is an advanced non-invasive imaging technique done to detect and diagnose various abnormalities in your body.
An MRI scan process is done using strong electromagnetic pulses to assess the images of the internal organs of your body. It is capable of detecting abnormalities in the internal organs such as the kidney, liver, brain, spinal cord, joints, chest, lungs, etc.
Procedure For An MRI Scan
You will be asked to lie down on the sliding table of the MRI machine for the process. The magnets in the machine will go around the internal organ the is being diagnosed. It will produce a strong electromagnetic field and the signals will be sent to a special computer to process into a detailed image.
Sometimes a contrast material will be used to get a clear picture of the abnormality. In that case, you should fast for at least 12 hours before the procedure. The contrast dye will be given either orally or will be injected into the vein.
The radiologist will be monitoring the entire procedure from the room nearby connected with the computer, mic, and speakers. Usually, MRI Scan is a long process and may take up to 90 minutes to complete the imaging.
MRI scan is a completely safe imaging process. However, patients who had undergone any heart valve implant or implanted any kind of metallic chips or plates, etc will not be allowed to take an MRI scan.
Prerequisites for MRI Scan
The following are the prerequisites for an MRI scan if the contrast dye is used in the procedure.
- Minimum 4 hrs fasting required before the scan.
- Your Creatinine and Blood Urea reports need to be brought to the scan center.
- In the case of any former consulting, take your previous medical reports to the lab.
