About Stress Thallium Test

Stress Thallium test is an imaging test that shows the blood flow to the heart when the body is put under stress. It helps the doctor monitor the arteries supplying blood to the heart. This is done by observing the blood flow activity when the body is put under physical stress, for example when exercising and when the body is at rest completely.

During the test, a liquid called a radioisotope is injected into one of the veins. The radioisotope flows through the blood and lands up in the heart. Once this radiation is in and around the heart, a special camera helps detect this radiation and shows any problems the heart muscle may be experiencing.

The doctor may suggest a Stress Thallium test for the following reasons:

  • Irregular supply of blood to the heart (when the body is put under physical stress)
  • If you are experiencing any chest pain
  • In case of history of heart attack(s)
  • To guide ongoing treatments/medications
  • To check the overall functioning of the heart and whether any damage has been done due to previous health issues

Procedure For Stress Thallium Test

As mentioned above, a liquid medication known as a radioisotope is injected into one of the veins. This radioactive liquid helps to mark the blood flow. A special camera known as the gamma camera helps to pick up these radiations inside the heart and shows any problems/issues the heart may be experiencing.

Stress Thallium Test is carried out by observing the blood flow in 2 situations:

  • When the body is in exercise mode

During this part of the test, the doctor will ask the patient to walk on a treadmill. The speed and level of the exercise will increase gradually to notice the effect on the heart.

  • When the body is at rest

During this part of the test, the doctor will ask the patient to lie down for about 15-30 minutes. The body is to be at complete rest. The patient will lay down with his/her arms above the head while the camera above captures the pictures.
