What Is A PET CT Scan?
PET CT scan is a mixture of positron emission tomography and computed tomography which is the most effective nuclear imaging technique that helps to diagnose cancer.
The full form of PET CT scan is Positron Emission Tomography Scan. A PET scan or a PET CT scan is used to detect the tumors in the body that can potentially turn into cancer.
A certain amount of radioactive substance is infused into the vein to help get clearer images. After this, the PET scan machine monitors the oxygen requirement, blood flow, and metabolism of your body at the cellular level.
CT scans produce precise images of the tissues and organs and PET scans reveal the activities of these tissues and organs. A combination of both helps to provide more accurate and detailed results.
How Is A PET Scan Performed?
- At the beginning of a PET Scan, a tiny amount of radioactive material is injected into the body. It is not painful or dangerous for the patient.
- Generally, the radioactive automatically dissolves and gets absorbed into the body within an hour. During this period, the patient is required to wait.
- After this, the patient is taken to a PET CT scan machine room and made to lie down. After getting into the position, the horizontal table moves upwards into the machine and the patient will move into the imaging machine as well.
- The PET Scan then begins and usually takes up to an hour to be completed.
Why Is A Full-Body PET CT Scan Prescribed?
In order to diagnose and monitor cancer and any related ongoing treatment, a PET CT Scan is prescribed. As more and more people are getting affected with cancer in India, PET CT Scans are required by medical doctors as they are a major key for cancer detection, treatment and planning.
Reasons for using PET Scan:
- Diagnose cancer
- Planning cancer therapy
- Measure effectiveness of ongoing treatment(s)
- Brain disorders
- Heart abnormalities
- Central nervous system related problems
Prerequisites For PET CT Scan
If a contrast dye (radioactive agent) is used before the PET Scan, a few things should be kept in mind –
- Minimum. 8 hours of fasting may be required.
- In the case the patient is diabetic, the doctor may stop all medication for a few days before and after the PET Scan takes place.
- Any previous medical records like old PET-CT scan report, prescriptions, and more should be carried, if possible.
Any Risk Associated With A PET Scan?
While taking a PET CT scan, the patient is exposed to X-Ray radiation and a tiny amount of radiation from the radioactive drug. There isn’t much to worry about, as the radiation in the radioactive tracer is quite small and fades away very quickly.
This is generally considered not harmful to the body. However, women who are pregnant are generally advised not to take a PET CT Scan as the impact of its radiation on the growing baby is not known.
